Scarab Ransomware

There is a significant new ransomware threat wreaking havoc on the internet.  A new version of the so-called Scarab ransomware (first spotted this June) started getting pushed out in a massive spam email campaign on Thanksgiving.  Within a few hours, 12.5 million emails had been sent using the Necurs botnet.

The spam emails use the  familiar subject line of ‘Scanned from (printer company name).’

Though Scarab is getting wide distribution, the software itself seems relatively simple and is being detected by most anti-malware programs.

As with all ransomware threats, caution should be used when opening emails.  Unless absolutely necessary and you’ve double-checked first, it’s a good idea never to click on links in emails.
