Keeping Hardware Up-To-Date

In the news last week were widespread reports of Visa cards not working at millions of businessess throughout England and Ireland.

Given the frequency of ransomware attacks and data breaches, many naturally assumed the outage was the result of a hack.

Not so, says Visa.

The cause was ‘hardware failure.’  According to the company ‘[t]he issue was the result of a hardware failure within one of our European systems, and is not associated with any unauthorised access or cyber attack.”

The lesson here, of course, is that not all IT disasters are the result of bad actors.  Some result from more mundane causes–like old equipment finally breaking down.  It’s a good idea to have a log of all your equipment and a schedule for timely replacements.

Also make sure you’re monitoring your equipment.  Many failures are preceded by predictable warning signs.
